About Us

The Granuaile & Famine Centre in Louisburgh, Co Mayo is an interpretative centre dedicated to two important aspects of Irish history:  Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen and the Famine of 1845 to 1852, known also as the Great Hunger.

The centre was opened by President Mary Robinson in 1991 and is regarded as being a major source of information on Grace O'Malley and the Famine.  Based on the Wild Atlantic Way, we offer a glimpse into life in the 16th Century when our strong pirate queen Grace O'Malley protected the waters surrounding us. In addition, we hold a detailed account of the 19th Century Famine that Ireland endured in this area, and the fascinating connection created with the Choctaw Indians that continues to this day.

We are located within the same building as the local library and the tourist information centre. We look forward to your visit.

Austin has been with the Museum since the early 90s, and was the first Chairperson of the Development Committee behind the Museum.

Austin acknowledges the importance of Mayo County Council in keeping the Musuem going by renting space from it for the local Library. He's also excited about plans for a new building, and believes that the future for the Museum is a bright one.
